Face Rockery

If you're new here, you may want to add some dickery to your feed reader by subscribing to my RSS feed. High five!

I’m suffering from a weird face thingie right now, but I’m not in the mood to talk about it in detail since I’m just starting to recover. I’m hoping to fully recover from this stupid thingie ASAP. Although this thingie has been the most unpleasant and most uncomfortable shit that has happened to me since… forever, something good came out of it.

See, when this thingie started, I became more anti-social than usual. For the last several days, it was just one big home-office-home cycle for me. Even online, I’m always not in the mood to talk to people, so most of the time, I’m off YM and Twitter. This gave me more time to do other stuff like working and putting up a new blog. Yes, you got me. The bottom line of this post is to tell you that I have a new blog.

This new blog is called Face Rockery (http://facerockery.bigbaddie.com). It’s a niche blog where I talk about my mistress: comic books and all things related to sequential art. I also yak about other forms of pop culture once in a while. I already tried this whole niche blog shit before, but I ended up quitting it. This time, I’m in it for the long haul.

This entry is part 9 of 10 in the series Top 5 Lists

Yeah, Graphic Fiction is just a glorified term for comics, but who cares? We can even call it Graphic Literature. Meh. I started reading comics way back in 1994. Or was it 1993? Whatever. The point is, I’ve been a comic book geek for more than a decade now and I’ve read a lot of the best that the industry can offer. As a true fan of the medium, it’s hard to pick just 5 great pieces of comic book goodness from the dozens of stories I’ve read, but I managed to do it.

#5: Identity Crisis - It’s probably the most disturbing superhero story I’ve ever read. Also, the most touching. Written by Brad Meltzer, this spandex drama involves rape, murder, witch hunts, triumph, and great loss. One gripe I have about it, though, is that Superman cries. Again.

#4: Y: The Last Man - Although I’ve only read the first three volumes of the collected editions, I still hold it in the highest regards. It doesn’t involve superheroes, but it does involve a global catastrophe, a reluctant everyman hero, a monkey, and lesbians. I can’t wait to read the rest of the story. Curse local comic shops for not having copies of volumes 4 onwards! Bah.

Volume 2

I’m settling in my new job quite nicely. Well, actually it’s not new anymore. I’ve been there for almost 2 months now. I’m also getting a hang of living in the big city, traffic hell and all. But it still feels like I’m in a transition stage. Everything just feels so new. Horizons getting bigger. Old limits fading away, new limits popping up from nowhere. It’s fun! With this transition stage, I feel I also need to move forward with this blogging thing. Thanks to the people of the Pinoy Blogoshpere Yahoo! Mailing List, I’ve found a new kind of hunger for blogging. And this hunger drove me to create another blog, Baddieverse. And what will happen now to LongBox? It’s time to re-imagine it. It’s time for an era to end. It’s time for Volume 2.

LongBox is now a comics-centric blog. I’m going to let my inner comic book geek talk about comics, movies related to comics, TV shows related to comics, comic book industry news, comic book and graphic novel reviews, and everything else there is to blog about sequential art. Baddieverse will contain my usual stupidity. Hehe.

This “Database Error” that keeps happening on this blog for the last few days is irritating the shit out of me. It’s the most annoying thing when you’re ready to go with your wacky ideas about a blog entry, only to find out that your blog is currently inaccessible because of a stupid database error. I’m seriously considering getting my own domain and a paid hosting service. I’m just a few error messages away from totally leaving free hosting behind. I swear, kids, the first chance I get a long break from work, I’m gonna get me my own domain and a paid hosting service. Gggggg!

Anyway, since I lost my wacky ideas while waiting for my current host to get its crap together, I’m just going to give you a recap of my week. Hooray!

I finished Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, probably the greatest comic book-based video game ever. Ever. It was freakin’ awesome to kick Galactus‘ ass and to slap around Dr. Doom. Doctor freakin’ Doom! Geek overload, man. Geek overload.

Manny Pacquiao versus Erik Morales. All the hype boiled down to a 3-round boxing match. I wish Rey Mysterio got into the action and gave Manny a 619. And a hurricanrana. And a triple corkscrew moonsault from the top rope. And a chair shot to the face. That would’ve been cool.

I settled in my new apartment along Ortigas Extension. The traffic can become hell sometimes. And I’m acting like the giddy naive “probinsyano” that I am every time I commute. I mean, I haven’t commuted in years! You’re thinking “Oohhh. Poor little rich jerk. Doesn’t know how to commute ‘coz he’s always running around in his RAV 4 and shit.” It’s not that I don’t know how to commute. I’ve just forgotten how dangerous it is to ask directions from total strangers every chance I get. Every. Chance. I. Get.

One good thing about having an apartment near where I work is I can go out with friends after office hours. I got to watch Casino Royale with an old friend. I don’t know if it’s just me not being able to watch a movie in a cinema for weeks, or if it was the company, or if Casino Royale just totally kicked major ass. I mean, I was never a James Bond fan, but after watching Casino Royale, I can’t get the James Bond theme out of my head. I kept fighting the urge to stick to the wall, sneak around corners, and hum the Bond theme on my way to the comfort room.

Speaking of kickass movies, I just purchased a DVD of X-Men: The Last Stand. Can’t wait to have an X-Men movie marathon. Yes, I’m lonely like that.

I think I may get the chance to put one of my “online masterplans” in motion after being invited into a mailing list for Pinoy bloggers. I’ve been thinking of doing it after I get my own domain, but I think the sooner I get it out of my system, the better. Here’s hopin’.

That’s my week. Yes, that’s as exciting as it gets for me these days. Cue the “Loser” song by Beck. I deserve it. Ggggg.
