Stubby Movie Review: Chronicle

This entry is part 15 of 15 in the series Stubby Movie Reviews

Chronicle

For people who are used to reading stories about people getting superpowers from strange objects that crash landed on Earth like me, Chronicle only offers the “found footage” approach as something new. In some instances, the “found footage” element totally feels forced and unnecessary. However, it does add some level of awe to scenes were the kids are using their telekinesis, even though most of these superpower scenes look totally fake, which beats the whole purpose of the “found footage” gimmick.

Stubby Movie Review: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

This entry is part 14 of 15 in the series Stubby Movie Reviews

I don’t want to use the word “perfection” when describing Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol but I’m going to do it anyway: It is perfection.

Brad Bird and his well-choreographed chaos. Tom Cruise and his insane stunts. Jeremy Renner and his “I’m just an analyst. No, I’m kidding. I’m actually an emotionally tortured secret agent who kicks ass. BOO-YAH!” shenanigans. Paula Patton and her sexy vengeance-based intensity. Léa Seydoux and her sexy assassin-y ways. Simon Pegg and his wacky field adventures. PERFECTION.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie that literally had me holding my breath. Best action movie of 2011, you guys. And on a final note, Paula Patton can light my fuse anytime.

Stubby Movie Reviews: Super and Superheroes

This entry is part 13 of 15 in the series Stubby Movie Reviews

I don’t know why but I decided to watch 2 movies about ordinary people dressing up as superheroes to fight crime and help people, but I did. Here’s what I think of Super and Superheroes.

Super

Super

Believe it or not, Rainn Wilson does a really good job at playing a sad and disturbed dude — who is also a total whack job. I mean, before your brain even decides on how hard you’ll laugh, you’re already thinking that this dude is nuts. Not funny nuts, but he’s-going-to-murder-me-when-I’m-in-the-shower-I-just-know-it nuts. Ellen Page turns up the crazy too by channeling the Joker and Stephanie Brown Robin at the same time. WITH X-23′S CLAWS. It’s violent and disturbing and it makes you doubt your own psychology because you constantly evaluate your reaction to various scenes of madness and sadness.

Stubby Movie Reviews: Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs, Couples Retreat and Sorority Row

This entry is part 12 of 15 in the series Stubby Movie Reviews

Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs

As I expected, it doesn’t have the heart of Pixar movies, but hot damn it sure as hell is funny. I found myself constantly laughing out loud. I’d like to think that I have a sophisticated sense of humor (well, sometimes) and this movie definitely tickled my sometimes sophisticated funny bones. It’s a fresh gift from the animation gods who have the habit of throwing cutesy talking animals our way every now and then.

Couples Retreat

I liked it but it’s not as funny as I hoped. It needs more Ken Jeong and less sappy Vince Vaughn speeches. The ensemble cast didn’t quite mesh in an elegant soup of hilarity and cheese, which is what I expected. Nevertheless, I give this a thumbs up. And by “this” I mean Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman in bikinis.

Sorority Row

If you’re a fan of slasher movies and hot sorority chicks, you will love Sorority Row. I know I did. Sure, it’s just I Know What You Did Last Summer with sorority girls and frat boys, but who cares? It follows the rules of slasher flicks faithfully. In fact, it doesn’t really offer anything new, but again, who cares? I love slasher movies because they’re stupid and bloody and sexy. This movie, my friends, delivers on all three.

Stubby Movie Review: The Boat That Rocked

This entry is part 11 of 15 in the series Stubby Movie Reviews

Plain and simple, I loved it. It’s one of those movies that make you wish you lived during the 60′s. It’s loaded with electric performances, eargasms and hilarious bits. I got a little choked up towards the end, though. I had a mix of the happies and the saddies (?!) as the movie ended. It just oozed with love for Rock and Roll, man. I don’t have a particular favorite when it comes to music, but goddammit if I had to pick, I’d pick the hell out of old school Rock and Roll.
