I Hate the Unaired Wonder Woman Pilot Because It’s Actually Not That Bad

I hate to admit it but I was wrong. I was one of those people who didn’t believe Adrianne Palicki would make a great Wonder Woman. I hated the teaser images with Palicki in costume. I didn’t believe Wonder Woman would translate well on TV without being corny and campy (sorry, Lynda Carter fans). I was wrong. Thanks to the magic of the Internet, I saw the unaired Wonder Woman pilot and I realized that I was so wrong.

Unaired Wonder Woman Pilot

My biggest gripe about the pilot during production was the costume. When I saw the first images of Palicki donning the Wonder Woman costume, I felt so much hate for it. I hated how it was all shiny and not Wonder Woman-y enough. I still didn’t like it when I saw the pilot but it actually looked good in some of the action scenes. I still have so much hate for the tiara, though.

Adrianne Palicki didn’t strike me as a good choice for the role. I knew she could pull off the action and the drama but I didn’t expect to see so much intensity and elegance in her performance. She actually gives us a Diana that is to be feared, respected, admired and desired all at the same time. That’s the Wonder Woman I want to see. She’s cute in civilian clothes too.

The plot didn’t do anything for me. It’s so flat that I think it was the main factor in the pilot’s failure. I can actually summarize it in one sentence: An evil pharmaceutical company does illegal human testing and Wonder Woman stops the shenanigans. Snore. Good job for hiring Cary Elwes as the default comic relief character, though.

I also love the fact that Wonder Woman gets most of her money for fighting crime by selling Wonder Woman action figures with big tits.

As for the main villain (played by Elizabeth Hurley), I can only say MEH. I understand that introducing legit comic book villains like Cheetah or Giganta can be distracting as audiences are still being introduced to Diana, her issues, her powers and her supporting cast, but a generic and totally hot businesswoman as the main villain? Too boring.

Unaired Wonder Woman Pilot

Cookie cutter main villain and bland plot aside, the pilot does have a seriously strong point other than Palicki herself. The action sequences, though still unfinished (you can still see the wires as Diana throws people around), show a lot of promise. I love the way Diana moves and fights. This Wonder Woman kicks ass in a way I’ve never seen a live action Wonder Woman kick ass before.  At one point during the big fight towards the end, I just had to mutter to myself “This chick is Jack Bauer with boobs.” Yes, I just told you that Adrianne Palicki’s Wonder Woman plays rough like Jack frickin’ Bauer. Think about that for a minute.

Unaired Wonder Woman Pilot

My low expectations might explain why I wasn’t totally disappointed with this unaired Wonder Woman pilot, but I can’t explain my unexpected admiration for it. I genuinely love this pilot, you guys. And that’s why I hate it. If it sucked major balls, I’d be happy to know that we will never see another episode again. But it didn’t totally suck. I am now forced to live life knowing that a potentially decent Jack Bauer-y Wonder Woman TV show died before it even lived.
