This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series People Skillz

Sometimes, I think of myself as someone who is very good with people. Sometimes, well, not so much. I often think about what the real deal is, and that’s why this new blog series exists. With People Skillz, I aim to finally determine if I’m a lean mean PR machine or if I’m the most socially retarded dickhead you will ever meet by sharing my interactions with different people. Here now is the first edition of People Skillz that I’d like to call AMBUSH AT THE MALL!

people skillz: ambush at the mall

So I went to Mr. Quickie at Robinsons Galleria to have some keys duplicated (I just moved to an apartment in Ortigas Extension, which is a blog post for another time), right? After getting my very own set of keys, I rushed to exit the mall so I can avail of the special promo at the parking lot. You don’t need the details for that. The important fact is I was in a hurry to get out of there. As I was about to reach the exit, a real estate chick got in my way and extended her hand to shake mine. Desperate for some human skin-to-skin contact, I shook her hand. That’s how this conversation started:

Real Estate Chick: “Hi! Happy new year! My name is [insert forgettable name here] and that over there is our booth.”

Me: “Okaaay.”

REC: “Can you give me a minute of your time?”

Me: “Umm, actually I need to go.”

REC: “Why? Where are you going?”

Me: “Umm, home.”

REC: “PERFECT! Your home can wait.”

Me: “…..” *confused uncomfortable smile*

REC: “….” *smug deadpan look*

Me: “I really need to go.”

REC: “But why? One minute. That’s all I need.”

Me: “I really need to go. Bye.”

REC: “Wait…”

Me: “I’m leaving now.” *starts to walk away*

REC: “WHY?!”

Me: “LEAVING!”

I can still hear her saying “WAIT!” and “WHY?!” as I was moving away from earshot. If you ask me, I would’ve considered staying for a couple of minutes if she were a lot nicer and, honestly, a little cuter. I may have lost it right at the end, but I think I handled that awkward encounter way better than most people would have.

Good job. Believe me, she’ll make you stay for half an hour at least.

Wala ka sa akin. I went to a seminar conducted by these people because they promised free dinner. Sabi sa akin 1 hour lang. So I brought my wife.

Long story short, that 1 hour lasted 4 hours and the dinner tasted like cardboard. Highfive!

I think it was really polite of you to shake her hand. I would’ve just waved and said I was in a hurry. :)

During one of those mall sales last year a sales guy sort of offered a pair of shoes to my friend as we passed by their booth:

Shoe guy: Sir, sapatos? *warm, friendly smile*

My friend: Alam ko. *yabang face*

LOLs.

LOL at the pic! Hee. You living emoticon, you.

Well… I usually dismiss these people with a hand gesture a la "talk to the hand."
So okay. You have better people skillz.

You’ve got to have mad patintero skills to avoid those sales people.
