Quitting Monthly Comics

Well, not immediately. I’m starting to really get serious with managing my finances and getting rid of things I don’t really need in my life right now. First on the chopping block: Buying Php1,000 worth (on average) of comics every week.

I currently follow around a dozen monthly titles and around a dozen mini-series. Plus, I get special issues related to the titles I follow. That puts me at an average of 6 comics per week. For someone who earns decent but not spectacular money and is trying to save up because he’s planning to move out (again) soon, this hobby is starting to hurt. Something’s gotta give. Hence I’ll be slowly getting rid of monthly comics in the coming weeks.

I know what you’re thinking. “Baddie you fool! You’ve been collecting comics for 15 years now! You can’t just quit on sequential art! You can’t even quit smoking and you’ve only been doing that for 5 years!” This is different, you guys. This is something easier to do because quitting monthly comics isn’t the same as quitting sequential art altogether.

I may stop buying comics every week, but I will still buy collections and graphic novels occasionally. Because, really. Once a comic book geek, always a comic book geek. I may be re-organizing my life priorities with a more mature stance, but if you look inside my mind and heart, this is still the image you’d see:

    i just wrote a similar post about fighting instant gratification. it’s hard being a responsible adult isn’t it? how come the comic books there are so expensive? do you buy 10 comicbooks a week? maybe get 2nd hand comicbooks from ebay.

    Awwww, Baddie, you’re growing up!
    And I don’t mean that condescendingly.

    Tama, tama. You’ll just have to either get richer, or make some kind of compromise between wants and needs. Goodluck! :)

    Responsibilities and priorities kinda suck, but they do get a little more fulfilling everytime, no?

    This is one hell of a hivemind.

    I've decided to quit monthlies as well. DC already cancelled 1/3 of my pull list, so that's a start.

    I also did that around last April. I didn't leave my room for a week. Okay, the room was in a hotel suite in Hong Kong, but still.

    Foo! You need not give up collecting comics! What you need is tons of tons of money, which you can attain by blocking out the sun in exchange for a gajillion dollars.

    @shouemucker: That's the plan. Heh.

    @Steel: My giant laser and earthquake generator plots didn't go so well so I'm taking things slow from now on.
