pirates of the caribbean: at world’s end

It’s the second swashbuckling day of DVD Week, and today, it’s all about the third movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise: At World’s End. I actually lost interest in the franchise when I heard the reviews on Dead Man’s Chest. I didn’t see it when it hit theaters. Same thing with At World’s End, but when I heard about Chow Yun Fat joining the cast in the third installment, I thought there will be some Kung Fu pirate action involved, but sadly, there were none. =(

The Story: I’m a sucker for end-of-the-world scenarios, whether they be literal or metaphorical. So if pirates try to convene to make their last stand against a changing world, I am so there. It’s just so epic that you wouldn’t mind bearing witness to WTH?!-inducing plot twists like Tia Dalma being Callisto. Bottom line is, you shouldn’t really care about the ridiculous story beats since it’s a movie about bloody pirates, after all.

The Eye Candy: It’s the prettiest among the three Pirates films. The addition of Asian visuals made things look fresh and new. The Many Jacks sequence is a hoot. It’s just frickin’ weird, seeing all those Jack Sparrows running around. The Rock Crabs look amazing too. But the biggest eye candy of all has got to be the maelstrom scene. When I saw two pirate ships spiraling down a maelstrom firing cannon balls at each other in the trailers, I said to myself “Dayyyyum.” And believe me, I don’t say that a lot. I just usually say “Asteeeeg.”

Anyway, that’s just an awesome visual right there. Also, Keira Knightley ain’t too hard on the eyes either. I’d show her my “piece of eight” anytime. Hyuk!

The Actors: I gotta say, I missed Geoffrey Rush when I saw Dead Man’s Chest on cable TV. It just wasn’t the same without him. And it’s awesome to see him back on this third Pirates movie. The Barbosa and Sparrow scenes are gold. Rush and Depp‘s performances are definitely the lifeblood of the movie, especially Depp’s. Come on, that’s a given. Also, Keith Richards as Jack’s daddy? Genius.

The DVD Extras: First of all, the interactive menus are pretty. It’s based on Jack’s psychedelic tour of Davy Jones’ Locker. It’s creepy and weird, and I love just staring at it. As for the extras themselves, I love it. A featurette about the technical stuff that goes on in a Jerry Bruckheimer movie is always epic in itself. And then there’s the story behind the song “Hoist the Colours”, which I find haunting and kickass at the same time. Love the background on the Brethren Court too.

A solid movie with a solid set of extras: YAY! I just find it stupid, though, that I have DVDs of the first and third movies but I don’t have the second. It’s going to be a hell of a pirate-y time once I get a hold of a 2-Disc edition of Dead Man’s Chest because once it does happen, I’m gonna have a swashbuckling good time with a bloody pirate movie marathon! And pizza.

I hope there’s a 2-Disc edition because all I’m seeing are gay 1-Disc suckiness. You guys think that’s how bad Dead Man’s Chest is? It doesn’t deserve a 2-Disc edition?

Also, Pau loves “three way sword fights”. HUHLOLZ

  2. Pau says:

Dead Man's Chest was bad. But I still plan on buying the DVD to complete the series, and for the three way sword fight. Which was pretty awesome.

  3. I liked this movie, but I’m not sure I will watch it again. Maybe when it’s on TV one day.

I'm with you there, pal. But instead of waiting for it on TV, I'll wait for my DVD player to play it. Hyuk!
