How Many Social Networking Sites Does It Take to Screw On a Light Bulb?

I’ve just been invited to join Facebook by an online friend. Bored like hell, I decided to bite and I registered. Plus, I also decided to update all my social networking accounts. And I just realized there’s a lot.

How many social networking sites do we really need? Or want, for that matter. I’m thinking sure, you get to stay updated with the lives of your real life and online friends, classmates, co-workers, and old flames. But you also encounter spammers, stalkers, posers, losers, and other types of freaks.

No, I don’t want to “add you as a friend”. And I don’t want to visit you at your other network. Unless by “sexygirlscutepets” you mean “sexy girls as cute pets”. Freak.

Most of these sites just offer a few things the others don’t, and it’s only a matter of time before the others catch up. It’s an ugly redundancy. That’s why I only visit a few of these sites regularly. The ones that offer unique and significant features, and more importantly, a wider base of users.

Friendster will always be my “default” social networking site. Most people I know who know how to use a computer are there. That’s why my Friendster profile is the most frequently updated. Get past the annoying spam-like bulletin board posts and the revolting profiles with incomprehensible grammar and spelling, not to mention ghastly customized themes., and you can say that Friendster is not a bad place to network.

Multiply comes in at number 2. Some people I know are there simply because they don’t like the atmosphere in other social networking sites, most notably Friendster and MySpace. I share the same feeling.

Although I despise the blinking backgrounds and the stupid way that some people type (sEri0uSLy, h0W Is diS c0oL?), I still sign up for new social networking accounts whenever people invite me, and I still maintain my existing accounts simply because there’s little sense in “networking” if you limit yourself to just one service.

On that note, here’s a list of the social networking sites I’m a part of with the corresponding link to my profile. Add me up. I promise I won’t bug you with stupid bulletin board posts.
