There are no words that can describe how happy I am about Viva Video bringing in Marvel Entertainment’s straight-to-DVD animated features like Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Avengers 2, and this movie here featuring Ol’ Shellhead: The Invincible Iron Man.

The Story: This got some comic book traditionalists up in arms with their panties in a bunch. Uptight pricks. I, on the other hand, don’t mind the film creators doing some modifications and upgrades on the mythos because first, I wasn’t an Iron Man fan until Civil War came along, so I really don’t give a crap about Iron Man continuity. Second, why would you want an animated feature to be 100% faithful to the medium it’s based on? Stories and characters in comics, no matter how iconic, don’t always equal great entertainment when ported brick-by-brick to another medium. And third, the story of ancient magics meeting bleeding edge technologies, with a dash of daddy issues, works for me. The Ultimate Avengers movies gave me a bigger geekgasm, but this one gave me a more satisfying story.
The Eye Candy: The animation here isn’t the best I’ve seen, but it isn’t the worst, either. And I’m talking about animation both in TV and movies. The movie starts off slow with all these animated talking heads, but once the four elementals of the Mandarin come to life, the action and the eye candy begins. It was awesome to see all the different Iron Man armors. A shame he only got to use 3 of those. But methinks Tony Stark donning his original armor during the climax of the movie is a nice touch.
The Actors: I have no idea who these voice actors are, but I think they did a good job. Not great, but good. Nothing worth raving or ranting about.
The DVD Extras: Um, there aren’t any. Hey Viva, what’s the big deal not including the special features? Bummer.
The movie doesn’t have enough in it to improve its re-watchabality, but it’s a solid ride if you just want to get your animated super-hero flick. I hope the upcoming live-action movie is an improvement over this animated one. That would totally be awesome. Nay, that would totally be invincible.
