Last Friday, I suffered from LBM very early in the morning. It happens to me quite a lot and I often always go to work, hoping for the day to zip by like the Flash on a caffeine high. But my gums were swollen, thanks to these stupid braces. That, the LBM, plus the idea of going through 2 hours worth of traffic forced me to call in sick for the first time during my 4-month tenure in my job. The silver lining? I got to rest all day and fantasize about going home. At around 9 pm, I was feeling OK already, so I took off and flew to UPLB for the last night of the UPLB Fair 2007. Home.

I was smiling while driving all the way from Sta. Rosa to UPLB. Yes, I’m a nutjob, but one more reason for the crazy smile en route to a mountain was the fact that I was going to see faces I haven’t seen for several years already. Once I arrived, I went straight to the booth of my infamous academic organization, UPLB MASS. Seeing new faces in that booth and greeting old friends just made the rest of the world go away. I totally forgot that there was a stage right in front of us with Datu’s Tribe and other bands performing. I also missed the yUPieLBi.com AVP that they showed on the projector.

That’s one of the two AVPs. Here’s the other one. Good thing we have them on YouTube.

Due to the stupid liquor ban, 10 bottles of Red Horse Grande from our stash got confiscated by those evil cops. This isn’t over, coppers! Nevertheless, it would take more than the fat arms of the law to stop our fun. We continued with our drunkassery like nothing happened, thanks to some of us with cat-like reflexes who hid the rest of the booze in a secret UPLB MASS pocket universe. We’re so like ninjas.

There’s just something about smelling the grass of the Freedom Park again. There’s a certain natural high in being under the stars with friends. There’s a unique stress-relieving factor in consuming booze with your brothers and sisters from other mothers. It’s a complete joy to drown out whatever emo drama you’re having in your life with this,

this,

and this.

Every year, the fair is the bright light that seduces the UPLB Alumni moths, and its last night is when the light shines brightest. Everybody from anywhere who used to be a part of UPLB comes home during the last night of the fair and immerses themselves in the familiar warmth of the UPLB atmosphere. Everybody comes home to old acquaintances, new drinking buddies, friends, and family. Everybody comes home to the magic of that little town at the foot of a mountain. Everybody comes home to the grass and the stars.

the grass and the stars…when i come back to UPM as an alumni, it will be a ‘concrete and the stars-hidden-by-smog’ kind of gig. but i still couldn’t wait for the feeling you described. something to look forward to.

Cool! Riz and Liz! LOLZ

@liz: You know what can enhance the nostalgia? If you get extended. But seriously, it’s a mix of happy and sad feelings so it’s totally awesome.

@riz: True, true. But you’re luckier, since UPD has a 6-day fair. UPLB only has 5 days to work with. And most big time bands perform in your fair. It’s unFAIR. LOLZ
