With all the attention comic books are getting in the mainstream media in recent years due to the popularity of comics-inspired movies, now is a good time as ever to profess my love for the sequential arts. Not that I’m ashamed of loving a medium that mainly focuses on men in colorful tights. It’s just that before this age of comics appreciation, there was a time when the world looked down upon comics as nothing more than bad entertainment and poison for young minds. You wondering why? Pay attention, kiddies. I’m going to give you a quick look into the quirky old world of comics. Let me start by saying that comics of yore were viewed by some as very suggestive reading materials for the youth, hence Dr. Fredric Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent. What an ass. It was all in his mind. It’s not like a comic book can suggest too much to a young and innocent mind.

The one good thing I see that came out of Wertham’s crackdown on comics was the rise of the superhero genre. Finally, the world was introduced to fine heroes that young people can look up to. Heroes who came off as noble and innocent. Heroes such as Batman and Robin!

Okay. Maybe Robin came off as a faggy little ass-jumper there, but Batman’s the Dark Knight! He’s nowhere near gay.
I… I’m sure that’s not what he meant.
Fine. So Batman and Robin aren’t the best examples of non-suggestive heroes. But if there’s one hero who’s the beacon of all things innocent, it has to be Superman.
Okay, those images were just taken out of context. There’s no real proof that Superman is a pussy.
Or a pedo.
Or gay in a Brokeback cowboy way.
So maybe superheroes didn’t actually help remove the “poison” attribute of comics from the world’s eyes, but at least those days of highly suggestive images are over. I guess comics just needed time to mature by itself. It grew up to be one of the pillars of modern literature and entertainment we all know and love. P.S. - If you want to read comics but you’re not into this whole superhero business, I suggest you go with Archie. His comics look innocent enough.
