newer avengers

The new roster of the New Avengers has been revealed. Some hate it because it’s not the “real” Avengers. People, things doesn’t always have to be the way they were when you were 12, okay? The fun part of reading comics is that characters change, team rosters change, the over-all direction of a monthly series change. The status quo needs to be shaken up once in a while to keep things interesting and fresh. Quit whining.

Some people do love the new roster that includes Echo, Ronin, Doctor Strange, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and that Peter Parker dude. It’s definitely not the “classic” Avengers. This group will apparently be formed as per Captain America’s wishes after Civil War ends. Cap’s fate will probably be decided in the last issue of Civil War, where he’ll probably die or give up being a costumed hero. Or maybe he’ll become too emo after Civil War and begin to wear another costume like, say, Ronin’s.

Coming from the other side of the Civil War fence, a new Avengers book titled Mighty Avengers will star another group of heroes. This group includes Iron Man, Wonder Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Sentry, Ares, and Black Widow. This resembles the “classic” Avengers more than Luke Cage’s emo posse. With two Avengers teams running around, it’s going to be a mighty new (pun! pun!) era for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. I can’t wait! My wallet, though, is not too excited about adding Mighty Avengers to my pull list.

Anyway, here’s the haul for this week:

52 #3752 #37: The cover spoils one of the greatest mysteries of the series: who is Supernova? Apparently, Supernova’s Booster Gold who faked his death, time travelled, gathered stuff to help out Rip Hunter to defeat Skeets, and made his pre-death self look like a jackass in front of the world. Get it? Tough luck. With this issue, things are moving at breakneck speed, which should be the case since the series is nearing its final stretch. So Booster’s not really dead, and apparently, so is Animal Man who “died” last issue. I’d love to see how they explain this one. Things are going to get real interesting with the space heroes after this issue’s last page that shows the two aliens who gave Animal Man his powers uttering the words “and so it begins”. Cryptic cliffhangers rock.

I give this 4 out of 5 Phantom Zone villains.

birds of prey #102Birds of Prey #102: I’m currently crushing on Manhunter. She’s so dreamy. And badass. Here’s something I never thought I’d see: Barbara Gordon versus Lois Lane. Well, sort of. As an intrepid reporter, Lois tries to fish information about Barbara and her Oracle alter ego. A well written back-and-forth, the only thing missing are the finger snaps to the left and to the right, beeyotches. I love the scene where Misfit “rescues” the rest of the Birds from evil government (kinda redundant, ain’t it?) dudes. This is the first time I’ve seen Gypsy, and I think she’s kinda hot. But not as hot as Manhunter! She’s badass. As usual, the art is so fine. I’m thinking I need to get the trades of older arcs of this baby. Have I mentioned that Manhunter is badass? And according to this issue’s cliffhanger, she’s gone rogue! So dreamy. *sigh*

I give this 5 out of 5 Mexican prison jailbaits.

the helmet of fate: detective chimpThe Helmet of Fate: Detective Chimp #1: Yes, that is a chimpanzee investigating the golden helmet of Dr. Fate on the cover. We find out in this one-shot that Fate’s helmet went into a journey of discovery all over the cosmos. We also find out that Batman is the world’s greatest human detective, but he’s nowhere near as good as Det. Chimp, or so he says. It may have some validity though since Det. Chimp solved a crime with just one glance at the crime scene. After solving the mystery that stumped two human detectives, the chimp got reintroduced to the helmet. Next thing you know, we have a new Dr. Fate in the form of a detective chimpanzee. Seeing the chimp in the Dr. Fate costume is priceless. I mean, come on. A monkey wearing a blue and gold superhero costume. A monkey! Sadly, Det. Chimp thinks being Dr. Fate is not for him. A very fun read, this comic is. I’m nowhere near interested in Dr. Fate, but seeing that cover just pulled me into buying it.

I give this 4 out of 5 chimpanzee-solved crimes.

marvel adventures: the avengers #9Marvel Adventures: The Avengers #9: Being an “all ages” book with stories existing out of the regular Marvel Universe, I wasn’t really interested in reading any of the Marvel Adventures books. But I’ve got two reasons on why I should own this issue: 1.) It’s written by Jeff Parker, the dude who wrote the awesome Agents of Atlas mini-series, and 2.) M.O.D.O.K. Avengers! I mean, seeing the cover alone with big-headed Avengers gave me a smile that only a badass Manhunter can give. It’s also nice that this is a self-contained story. Seeing how much fun I had reading this “kiddie” book, I might try it out again next time. With Nextwave ending soon, I need a fun title on my pull list. And looking at that cover, it just screams fun! In a very “conquery” way.

I give this 5 out of 5 bumbling A.I.M. idiots.

she-hulk #15She-Hulk #15: I’m not too keen on the art on this one, but that’s the only problem I have with the book. I never thought that several pages of The Abomination can be so much fun and interesting. After reading this, I now look at She-Hulk as more than a female Hulk. She’s got most of the Hulk’s strength, plus she was trained in hand-to-hand combat by Captain America and Gamora, the Deadliest Woman in the Universe! You don’t wanna try her Kung Fu! Plus, she’s hot. I never thought green skin would be so sexy. And speaking of sexy, we’re introduced to a new supporting character for She-Hulk: Agent Cheesecake. And that’s exactly what she is. Cheesecake. A S.H.I.E.L.D. Life Model Decoy programmed for seduction, combat, and retrieval. She can arrest me anytime.

I give this 4 out of 5 candygrams.

It’s a pretty good week for my reading pleasure. Only five titles, but they’re all mighty fine reads. And I’ve just realized that when it comes to comics, I do judge the book by its cover. I suck.
